There's a new web site for MacRae's of Homosassa that launched in August of 2007. It is a very informative web site and is fully dedicated to the establishment of MacRae's of Homosassa complete with photos and current room rates. I can't say enough good things about the fine folks that operate MacRae's Office and Bait Shop. They are friendly and helpful. It is old Florida in a home-spun way. There are colorful natives less the grass skirts running the show. The owner, Gator MacRae is a third generation resident of Old Homosassa and grew up on the property with 3 older brothers and one sister. His grandfather built the original structure in 1917 and his Dad constructed the Bait Shop in 1953 and is still standing. The Shed is an integral part of the Bait Shop even though their functions are related to each other they are somewhat different. The Shed keeps the rain off of a dozen or more rental 14' Jon motorboats and several 20' pontoon boats. In 2001, a riverside beverage and food hut was neatly built squared under the shed accompanied by a three-sided row of bar chairs. There are plenty of picnic tables and lounge chairs surrounding a make-shift dance floor where on the weekends folks let their hair down. In the cooler months heaters are lit up and a nice camp fire site with benches is available for the motel guest. On the edge of the property the L-shaped log cabin was constructed in the early 90's by Duncan MacRae. It is divided into 12-double motel units and 6-deluxe efficiencies. The kitchens in these rooms are fully-equipped for home cooking, not that many folks do that anymore. The conference room in the corner of the building is named the Gator Den. This private room has a kitchen with tables, chairs and restrooms. A TV is centered for sports after a long day on the water. You must inquire to reserve the room for a modest fee. The real attraction though is the river itself and one can come down and watch it flow by. You owe yourself a visit to this charming little family compound. Rustic in appearance, MacRae's is the perfect place to stay while visiting Homosassa. You can relax in one of the old fashioned rockers on the front porch while leisurely watching the river--and you will find yourself in the hub of fishing activity.
For food, The Shed offers seafood baskets and fried mushrooms. For full sit down lunch or dinners, a short walk to the restaurant next door provides some good food especially on Wednesday nights because it is grilled steak night. Rates available on request. Sorry, no pets allowed.
