FISHING REPORT

January 02 2003
...
As a child of perhaps 7 years old, I had the freedom to go fishing on the Homosassa River along the docks and shoreline after school and on weekends. My favorite fish to catch besides bluegill and largemouth bass were mangrove snapper. These fish still give me a thrill much like 40 years ago, only through different eyes.

River Parker, age 4, and his Dad, Randy are natives of the Homosassa and Chassowitzka fishing villages. Through the Christmas spirit the Parkers’ were invited to go fishing with me. I also invited my son John to come along and we idled up to the edge of the Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park to catch some mangrove snapper.

Along the way we saw many manatees/divers and had to steer around them in the narrow corridor of the headwaters of the Homosassa River. But this story is not about manatees or safe havens, so we will just say that we enjoyed seeing them play with the divers.

The half-day outing was perhaps one that River will always remember. I know that his Dad and I will. River’s Mom bought him a new rod and reel that was perfect for catching the snapper with small pieces of fresh shrimp.

Each Time River reeled in a snapper he would say excitedly, “I got him! He’s a real big one! I can feel him! There he is! Oh, he is so big!”

We estimated that River, his Dad and my son John caught at least 40 fish. 4 of the snapper were above the legal limit of 10 inches. They were kept and Randy took them home to prepare them for his son.

That is in part what fishing is really about if you have a son or daughter. Take them fishing or hunting and you will not have to hunt them later in life. They will be enjoying the great outdoors.

Have a Great Day today!
