FISHING REPORT

June 17 2003
...
No doubt there were some really big tarpon here in May as a world record was verified by the International Game Fish Association. Tom Evans guided by Capt. Al Dopiark landed a 190.5 pound tarpon in 30 minutes using a fly rod with a 16 pound tippet.
This record was previously held by Billy Pate for 21 years with a big female cow full of spawning roe of 188 pounds.
For June, hotter weather has changed everything. Air temperatures are ranging from the high 80's during the day to the low 70's at night with water temperatures in the low 80's which equals perfection for the basking of silver king fishery. The month of June has brought in a lot more fish. Schools are everywhere we look. And they are hungry.
Tommy Newell a long time friend of 30 years from Osprey Fly shop in Chattanooga fought a 60 pound tarpon to the boat this past weekend. Not all Homosassa tarpon are giants.
If you need to look at some tarpon and can't go then log onto my home page at http://www.homosassafishing.com/
Also a very interesting new web site and non-profit organization that is real cool is http://www.tarbone.org/
If you want to give the silver king a try either on fly or on spin tackle let me know. I have a couple of days open on June 25-26 and July 2, 3, 4, 7 and 10 for Homosassa tarpon.
A decision to be made could result in fishing Homosassa tarpon throughout July as the fish were really late this year in St. George Sound.
Starting July 11 through August 30 I am tentatively scheduled to follow the fish up the coast to St. George Sound. These fish are hungry and very predictable in their paths like being on a railroad track. All well placed shots in front of west bound single to quadruple are potential eaters as the fish are aggressive.
Currently my reservation book is open from July 11, 16-25., August 5-6, 18-30 for Big Bend tarpon.
Have a Great Day!
I am getting ready to rip some lip.
