Catches like the one highlighted on Dec. 13th turned out to be one of the best BIG trout day since the 20" rule has been in effect. These trout were caught offshore out about 8 miles. I think the fishing pressure is less. Iron Planet's Scott Linder group all had one of over 20-inches, the largest was just under 24-inches.

Although we did not photograph all the short grouper we caught they were fun and each angler had about 50 throwbacks. We kept two bluefish for a friend from the Phillipines of 1st Mate Jesse Meyer. Jesse was a huge help to us all.

Earlier in the month my best Jr. First Mate is Tyler Walters made things go smoothly onboard the 24' Carolina Skiff.

On a fun fishing trip, Tyler, 14 landed a 20+ inch trout using a Catch 2000-808. His brother "Buford" struck out except for some grass he could use for poke salad.

How does a 10-year old fight a tarpon twice his size and three times as old? He does the best he can esp. when the boy does it all himself.

He cast, hooked and fought the tarpon for over 3 hours through sweat, agony and tears.

I'll let the pictures show the rest of the story.

World Class Angler Tom Evans, holder of many IGFA world records and guide Al Dopirak cheered on veteran angler Tom Schell during a late afternnon battle with a silver king.

Schell had the fish whipped in just 20 minutes until he decided he wanted his fly back. Later in an effort not to break his soft action T & T fly rod the battle continued for about an hour.

When T Evans and Al arrived they egged Schell on to put pressure on the poon and to keep his head up once it was on its side.

The rod broke and the instant later I hand-lined the fish up close enough to grab it while Evans took the photos of the action.

Evans later loaned Schell a meat stick, a term for a stiff 9' one-piece Biscayne 12-weight. The rod was rigged with a Tibor Gulfstream reel and a 3M Mastery Series fly line.

All these photos are from several days fishing with Pat Burchard, Sue Burchard-Murray and John Murray. We had a ball catching all these fish and it is always a treat to have the priviledge to fish with them each and every year. Most of the days we all got our limits of reds and trout with a few flounder thrown in.
